7.4 – Lesson 14: Study Guide & Summative

Success Criteria – I can develop a model and explanation to describe the flow of energy and cycling of matter in a system.
Video Starter(2:54-4:07 – 2x)
Lesson Slides
  1. When plants are not doing photosynthesis, they take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide and water above the surface.
  2. Plants use their stored food molecules in cellular respiration for energy just as animals do.
  3. Sugar that is made from photosynthesis can be stored and is also used for plant growth.
  4. All the food we eat, even the food from animals, can be traced back to being from plants at some point.
  5. Decomposers recycle matter and energy from dead plants and animals back into the system.
  6. Atoms are continuously moving between living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) things.
  7. Atoms are continuously recycled. Nothing is really new. The atoms that make up something new (or any living or nonliving thing) had been a part of something else before.

Study Guide

My Story as a Carbon Atom

🌱 Plant

  • I start in the air as CO₂.
  • A plant takes in CO₂ and uses photosynthesis to make sugar.
  • I become part of the plant.

🐄 Animal

  • An animal eats the plant and takes me in.
  • Cellular respiration breaks down the food for energy.
  • I am released back into the air as CO₂ (or stay in the body).

🍄 Decomposer

  • A decomposer breaks down dead plants/animals or waste.
  • It uses cellular respiration for energy.
  • I am released back into the air as CO₂.

Deserts Episode

7.4 – Lesson 13: What happens to food that doesn’t get eaten?

Vocabulary – Decomposers are organisms—primarily bacteria and fungi—that break down dead organic matter and waste products, recycling essential nutrients back into the ecosystem.

Success Criteria:

  • I can trace the path of energy from the sun through producers, consumers, and decomposers.
  • I can explain how matter is recycled through food webs and the environment.
